Permission to Move: Why You Don't Have to Stay Still During a Massage

One thing I always want my clients to know is this:

You don't have to stay perfectly still during your massage.

It's easy to assume that once you're on the massage table, you're supposed to stay in the same position until the treatment is over. But the reality is, this is your session, and I'm here to help you feel as comfortable as possible.

Need to wiggle? Stretch your neck? Adjust your arm? Shift your hips? Bend your knee? Let me know if you need an extra pillow or support?

All of that is completely okay—in fact, I encourage it.

As a massage therapist, my goal isn't for you to stay perfectly still. My goal is for you to feel safe, supported, and able to relax. Sometimes that means listening to your body when it tells you it needs to move.

I know this from personal experience. When I receive a massage, I find it difficult to lie face down for long periods without my back becoming uncomfortable. I always appreciate therapists who create an environment where I feel comfortable saying, "Can I adjust?" or simply moving without feeling like I'm doing something wrong.

That experience has shaped the way I work.

I want every client to know they have permission to move, speak up, and ask for what they need. Whether it's changing position, taking a deeper breath before turning over, or asking for more support under your ankles or chest, it's all part of creating a treatment that works with your body, not against it.

Massage isn't about staying perfectly still.

It's about giving your body the space to soften, unwind, and be listened to—including when it's telling you it needs to move.

So if you're ever on my massage table and your body says, "I need to adjust," please do. This is your time, and I want you to feel as comfortable and supported as possible.
